Completely agree with you. This is why I sometimes find it hard to place myself on the political spectrum. The one problem is that the “traditional leftists” who have the beliefs I described are being overtaken and out-shouted by the alt-left, which has taken over much of the Democratic Party. Liberals like Mark Lilla, Jonathan Haidt and others have written eloquently in defense of some of these kinds of traditional leftist beliefs and against identity politics, but for each of these voices of reason, it always seems like there are 50 squawking alt-leftist identity-mongers springing up with bitter denunciations and ready-at-hand accusations of racism and the like.
