Directing contempt at Trump because of his antics on The Apprentice, his clubbing days or any of his conduct before he became President is sort of like directing contempt at Reagan because he was an actor in Westerns, Schwartzenneger because of his action hero days or Jesse Ventura because he was a pro wrestler. To be sure, Trump deserves some degree of contempt for his very UN-Presidential behavior while in office, but my point is that the over-the-top overreaction to him is making it impossible to give a fair hearing to policy proposals that deserve such a hearing.

My example was the current immigration bill, which is, in my view, very sound policy, but it’s being met with unbridled hysteria instead of trenchant analysis. An exception to that is this recent article on Politico.com, which is not at all a right-wing site, as you probably know, and it does a pretty good job explaining why Trump’s proposal actually makes total sense if you care about issues such as income equality, quality of life, jobs for those Americans currently at the bottom of the socio-economic latter, etc. I suggest you read the article before joining the mindless chorus of voices dismissing anything and everything Trump says or does. As I said earlier, I have many reservations about him myself, and I think he’s done and said many dumb things, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to ignore the positive stuff and focus only on the negative.
