I completely agree with virtually everything you wrote. The irony of denying the existence of the “alt-left” is that, just as you say, it’s no longer “alt.” It’s totally mainstream. The totally mainstream Hillary Clinton, in her routine pandering to identity politics, was the one who was alt-left among the two principal candidates running in the Democratic primaries during this election season, while Bernie Sanders represented the more traditional “real left” and was routinely criticized for changing the conversation to a discussion of inequality and the 1% when #BlackLivesMatter wanted to talk about race. My point in the article is to distinguish the kinds of traditional “left” creeds that have represented the mainstream for a long time in prior decades with this new brand of aggressive identity politicking that’s taken over the Democratic Party, the mainstream media and academia.
