I think the ignore-it-and-it’ll-go-away approach would work only if this were an issue only conservatives cared about, so that if they stayed silent, no one else would raise a peep. But the reality is that Colin Kaepernick and the whole cause he’s embraced are already the subject of adoring acolytes on the politically engaged left. As a result, conservatives ignoring the issue will just result in a public love-fest directed towards Nike, bringing about a future where other companies will be emboldened. Nike needs to suffer for making this decision. The only way to accomplish that is to attack it in its share price, its merchandise sales and its reputation.
