I wonder sometimes whether they misrepresent these things because they are genuinely committed to a misguided vision of social justice and just blind to their own prejudices or whether there’s something more sinister afoot where their editorial staff is acting on some directive from above to sensationalize this kind of coverage of identity issues because they know it generates clicks, controversy, sales, etc. Either way, of course, it’s enormously irresponsible, and it’s making our racial climate worse and worse.
