Thanks, as always, for reading and for your comments, which I agree with, of course. On the issue of our identifying, first and foremost, as our ethnic/racial/gender/sexual/religious groups and, only a distant second, as Americans, this is part of the whole move from the “melting pot” to the “salad bowl” model of American society that first came to prominence in the 1990s. It’s very unfortunate, and I’ve made an extensive argument here about why a unified national identity is absolutely indispensable for us to be living in a functional, rather than totally dysfunctional, nation:
