That anecdote you retold is precisely the kind of thing I’m getting at, yes. These situations that are really nothing more than a bit of clumsy flirting that might cross over into the “just a bit sleazy” category are being lumped together with true sexual assault. If this woman you describe had been interested in the professor, then obviously the episode would’ve gone down very differently, but she wasn’t, so it’s an unwelcome advance. Okay, so it happened, and it’s a bit awkward for both of them afterwards, but in an adult world, both of you let it go, forget it and move on. In the infantilizing world of #MeToo that we love in now, however, it becomes a big deal for both of them, and then people get outed, shamed and fired, and universities have to promulgate all sorts of silly policies about student-faculty relationships, etc. It’s just dumb.
